Service Learning Presentation

Over 30 faculty and staff from 7 Community Colleges participated in a workshop led by Dr. Robert Franco, Professor of Anthropology and Director of Research and Planning for Kapi'olani Community College. The workshop was hosted by Northern Virginia Community College and broadcast via the VTEL system to Tidewater Community College, Central Virginia Community College, Virginia Highlands Community College, John Tyler Community College, and Virginia Western Community College. This workshop covered the topics of service-learning in general education and the "nuts & bolts" of developing a service-learning course. For additional information please contact Kris Morelli, Executive Director of Virginia Campus Compact (kmorelli@richmond.edu).

Dr. Franco's presentation focused on service learning applied to general education at Kapi'olani CC in Hawaii, though the questions and answers ranged to other disciplines.  For instance, in 1998, KCC had a grant for 2 + 4 program.  Dr. Robert W. Franco holds a Ph. D. in Anthropology and chairs the Social Science Department at Kapi'olani Community College.
