May 9, 2002, Workshop Held at JSRCC for MRCTE

Creating a High-Impact Classroom Climate

Dr. James Eison, founding Director of the University of South Florida (Tampa) Center for Teaching Enhancement brought lots of good ideas with him and elicited a bunch from the 56 attendees at this workshop.

Basically, there were 5 questions to answer as the structure of this workshop.  Selected ideas follow from the reports of the faculty groups made over the course of the day's workshop, but a compendium of the notes gathered from participants will be compiled and linked from this page.  (Note that Dr. Eison's ideas are available free via the handout for the day.  Follow the request procedure in the block above.)

Dr. James Eison spoke with several of the workshop participants singly and in groups during the day about their interests or the day's activities.  Here he is shown sharing the Ukrops-catered breakfast with Dr. Fay Kelle of Mary Baldwin College's faculty who staff that college's Richmond Regional Center at 1801 Libbie.  About 40% of the participants were visitors, including Dr. Susan Coffey, Professional Development Director of the VCCS, Drs. Joseph Morolla and Zachary Goodell from VCU's Center for Teaching Excellence, Karen Dorgan of Mary Baldwin's Richmond Regional Center, Teresa Miller of Piedmont VA CC, and several full-time and adjunct faculty from our sister college across the James River--John Tyler CC.**

To read highlights of the workshop, you may click on the links below or the buttons at the bottom of the page.  "Back" and "Next" buttons are provided on these summary pages for your convenience.

* Any of the full-time or adjunct faculty from JSRCC, JTCC, PVCC, RCC, or SVCC may be very interested in Dr. Eison's ideas and may make a proposal to present results of their Summer or Fall trials of the teaching methods noted in these pages or in Dr. Eison's handout.

** Apologies to participants and to readers for the somewhat out-of-focus photos.  This was my first attempt at indoor photos and I learned that I need to get a bounce flash for my camera so that I won't be forced to set the camera's aperture to let in maximum light, which makes only the foreground in focus.
