This strand of inquiry focuses on the ideas of Stephen Brookfield and others.  Critically reflective teaching offers an engaging discipline to faculty.  The underlined links below will take you to more information about Prof. Brookfield and about critically reflective teaching.  (Click "Back" in your Netscape/Internet Explorer or use the menu for "Go" or "History" to select this page to return.)

bulletBecoming a Critically Reflective Teacher is praised as "wise" and "jargon-free" at this publisher page.  Comments sent to the publisher praise the book as "the most compelling, informed, perceptive, and sensible book available" regarding tools that faculty can use to transform themselves and learning in their courses.  That's no understatement.

bulletBrookfield's interview touches on how assumptions can become tyrannical or confining in our professional lives, ground rules for discussion that have developed into his most recent book, and the basis of teaching as questioning.
bulletOne of Brookfield's major tools is the "critical incident questionnaire," which is featured in the same National Teaching and Learning Forum issue that featured his interview in 1996.
bulletBrookfield made his second visit to NVCC's Loudoun Campus on March 3, 2000, to conduct a workshop on critical reflection and structuring discussions.  The comments on these somewhat interactive pages highlight that event.
bulletProf. Brookfield also presented a workshop at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College on Thursday, April 19, 2001, at the Parham Road Campus.
bulletHibbison maintains a website for Brookfield readers.  At the cover page, click the "Login" button. Logging in as a guest is possible by clicking "Preview." Then select "Course Catalog" -- "Miscellaneous" -- "Critically Reflective Teaching."  You will be able to see the read-only pages, e.g. "Course Documents" for activities like the "Teacher Learning Audit" or the "Role Model Profile," but not forums or other write-permissioned pages--unless you request passcodes from ehibbison@jsr.vccs.edu
