Final Exam

Write 3-4 pages about ONE of the following topics, emailing your essay to your instructor in a format that you know will open on your instructor's computer (if you attach your essay) or pasted into the email message.

Reminder: The more points you need to finalize an acceptable course grade, the more important it is to provide detailed support for your ideas.

Option 1: How does literature enrich our lives (and your life)? As you consider this question for people in general and yourself in particular, mention several of the works you read (or viewed as movies) for this course, as well as others you know.  Literature can also include music, especially songs. (Hint: Mentioning titles is not enough to show familiarity with the work; quote relevant phrases and explain what they mean to you in connection with quality in literature.)

Option 2: In your view, what is the best work of literature you read for this course?  Define "best" (Is it most moving, most ironic, most profound, having the most complicated plot, or what?)  Along the way, tell why a few other works may have been close but fell short of "best."  (Hint: Mentioning titles is not enough to show familiarity with the work; quote relevant phrases and explain what they mean to you in connection with quality in literature.)

Option 3: Evaluate the readiness of this course to be offered statewide.  Cite specific pros and cons about the course calendar, including the pace, the readings, the writing assignments, presentation options, contact with classmates and the teacher, ease of computer use, and course policies, such as revising essays for a higher grade.  To convince me to make a change or to convince the VCCS about the benefits of the course, please be as clear as possible.  For instance, if you think the class should read Antigone instead of Trifles, don't just say "use better readings" but mention the plays by name and tell why Antigone is better for a course on critical thinking about literary works.  As another example, if you believe "we ought to write to each other more often," suggest what you would be willing to do as a peer to help improve the writing of a classmate.  Why should (or should not) this course be a model for English 112 for the entire Virginia Community College System?

Option 4: Complete a research paper on a literary topic.  About a third of VCCS colleges require a research paper in ENG 112, though not necessarily for researching literature but definitely for writing persuasively.  Study the ideas and sample in your textbook (Stanford 139-155) as well as
